If you’re even remotely tapped into tattooing culture, you’ve probably attended — or at least heard of — a tattoo convention before. But if you haven’t, I’m here to tell you all about it.
Hosted by Villain Arts, the Baltimore Tattoo Arts Festival is one of the biggest tattoo events on the East Coast. It’s loud, chaotic, inspiring, a little overwhelming, and honestly one of the best places to dive head first into the world of tattoo culture in its most raw, unfiltered form.
Whether you’re going to get tattooed, network, people watch, or just want to know what the hype is all about from the comfort of your own bed, here’s the breakdown of anything and even thing you need to know.

How Did The Convention Even Start?
Villain Arts was founded in 1999 and has since grown into the largest tattoo festival organizer in the U.S., hosting 30+ conventions annually across major cities. The Baltimore stop has been running for well over a decade, consistently pulling in hundreds of artists and thousands of attendees each year.
What started as a single convention in Philadelphia, which has since become not only the oldest running but the largest running tattoo convention in the world, evolved into a traveling tattoo circuit, bringing together:
International tattoo legends
Up-and-coming artists
Vendors and brands
Tattoo collectors and enthusiasts
At this point, it’s less of an “event” and more of a cultural hub for tattooing.
What The Baltimore Convention is Actually Like
Held in the heart of Baltimore City at the Baltimore Convention Center, the event runs on a Friday through Sunday (this year, it is April 24th through the 26th).
Show hours are:
Friday: 2pm to 11pm
Saturday: 11am to 11pm
Sunday: 11am to 8pm
Inside the convention center, you can expect to see a handful of activities going on! Including…
LIVE TATTOOING
You’ll see hundreds of artists tattooing simultaneously; Everything from fine line to full color realism to bold traditional to anime, and more. Now these artists are packed inside like sardines, working back to back from one another as some of the greatest talents in the world. It’s truly a spectacle of its own.
TATTOO CONTESTS
These are daily competitions that show off all kinds of work with a handful of categories, such as best small color work, best healed work, or of course the most honorable — best in show. They’re strongly competitive, but great for exposure and an opportunity to gain huge bragging rights.
INTERESTING ENTERTAINMENT
This isn’t your typical MC’ed event. We’re talking sideshow acts like sword swallowing or walking on glass, human suspension, fire performances, and much more. There’s something for everyone!
VENDORS AND MERCH
T-shirts, art prints, handmade jewelry, crystals, niche collectibles, and more, you could truly go broke off the vendors alone. I can say with confidence I’ve spent half my budget in a weekend on all of the cool things you can find in even a single row of booths. It only makes it that much more fun!
Why Artists Love It (And Why It Matters for Their Career)
From an artist perspective, conventions like this are huge opportunities.
They’re not just about tattooing—they’re about:
Networking with other artists
Learning new techniques
Building your name in the industry
Gaining exposure outside your local area
Even back in earlier conventions, artists describe it as a place to collaborate, get feedback, and grow creatively. With thousands of attendees and artists packed into one building, an artist can feel like a small fish in a sea of onlookers. However, each onlooker is an opportunity for growth and an even bigger opportunity for a forever client. It’s the perfect chance to grow your social media following, get to know new names and an opportunity to feel inspired.
If you’re serious about tattooing, this environment pushes you whether you’re ready or not.

Getting Tattooed There: What You Should Know
We can be honest, this is the real reason people go to the tattoo convention. But let’s talk about a few realities of actually getting tattooed at the convention.
Booking Ahead > Walking Up
The best of the best can expect to be booked weeks — or even months — in advance. Walking up usually equates to simpler designs and longer wait times. If you have your eye on someone in particular, or looking to start an extensive project, be prepared for advanced notice.
Do Your Research
There are hundreds — and I mean hundreds — of artists under one roof. Not all of them are the same style, and not all of them have the same skill level. It’s important to remember that going to the convention is not the same as a typical shop environment. It can be loud, chaotic and rushed. That doesn’t make it bad, it just makes it different. It also makes it incredibly easy to make an impulsive decision.
Take your time to look for healed work, consistency, the right style you’re looking for, and positive reviews even outside of the convention. Remember tattoos are permanent, and so is your decision on the artist that is doing it.
Pro Tips for Surviving the Weekend
Go in with a plan. Wandering the convention can be fun, and for some people that’s what they’re there for. However, you won’t have as much fun when you realized you missed the artist you actually wanted. Know before you go what your intentions are.
Bring more money than you think…and remember: Cash is King! Entry tickets are $25/day and $50 for a weekend pass. Remember that not every artist or vendor takes debit card or alternate forms of payment, and you always want to avoid that pesky ATM surcharge. Bring more cash than you expect — you never know!
Stay hydrated and eat. You’re going to be on your feet for hours, or under the needle. Either way, you want to make sure that you’ve had a full meal, snacks throughout the day, and drinking plenty of water so that you don’t feel exhausted before, during, or after.
Saturday is peak day. Fridays always get some hustle and bustle of people coming after work and checking it out, while Sunday is slowed down as people prepare for their upcoming work week. However, Saturday is always the most chaotic. Pick a day that works best for you, and be prepared for the crowd surges.
Remember to let loose and have fun! The convention is all about community, artistry, and most importantly, having a great time. Don’t let all of the chaos get in the way of your main goal!
The Big Question: Is It Worth It?
The Baltimore Tattoo Convention is insane, in the best ways. It’s inspiring, overstimulating, creative, and slightly unhinged. You’ll have the opportunity to see incredible work, artists you admire, and maybe realize we’re all just people trying to make something of ourselves amongst the big crowd.
Whether you’re an artist or a client, this is one of those experiences that reminds you what tattooing is actually all about — it is raw, imperfect, expressive, and constantly evolving throughout the decades. If you’re trying to grow in this industry, you don’t just attend events like this, you study them. And if you’re interested to see what the hype is all about, come check it out!
